Smart locks are a type of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth lock that allows users to remotely control access to a building without the need for in-person contact. They use virtual keys that can be accessed on mobile devices to simplify the check-in process and eliminate the need for physical keys. There are many different types of smart locks available, and it can be difficult to choose the best one for your rental property. It's important to choose a high-quality, secure smart lock to ensure the safety of your guests and property.
Note, not all smart locks are keyless deadbolts. If you want something that gets installed directly into the door, that has to be a keyless deadbolt.

How We Selected The Best Airbnb Smart Locks
Each smart lock has its own unique features, but the best have some things in common. Namely, each of the smart locks featured here come highly recommended by vetted hosts, have great reviews, top-of-the-line security features, an accessible mobile app, are easily installed, are durable and well-made, and look great on your doors.
Learn more about the criteria we used to determine the best smart locks for your Airbnb:
- Host Recommendations: We reached out to known Airbnb and rental hosts to get their first-hand reviews and opinions on the best smart locks available.
- Online Reviews: We then scoured the web for reviews on smart locks to see which are worth the investment.
- Security Features: Of course, we checked out each lock’s security features and rated those with extra security features higher.
- Accessibility of App: A smart lock is only as convenient as the app it comes with. We looked at how accessible each app is on different platforms, how streamlined the interface is, and how well it performed overall.
- Ease of Installation: Does the smart lock need a locksmith to install, or can you DIY its installation? We added points for locks that are easily installed yourself, with only basic tools needed.
- Durability: Airbnbs get a lot of wear-and-tear, and a lock that breaks every few months ranks low on our convenience scale. Thus, we rated locks that are built to last much higher.
- Design: Finally, we considered how a lock looks on a door, and gave more points to sleek-looking and unobtrusive locks. Some locks also come in a variety of finishes, which we took into account as well.
According to our criteria, the best smart lock for Airbnb hosts is the Schlage Encode Plus WiFi Deadbolt. Its built-in WiFi connects seamlessly to your home’s network, making it accessible from anywhere. It’s compatible with various home automation platforms, connects with Apple’s Home Key, can store up to 100 custom codes, can be installed yourself, and comes in a variety of finishes to suit any home.
1. Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt: Best Overall Smart Lock
The Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt is Schlage’s 2022 offering, and an upgrade from their 2019 Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt. Options start at $487.65, and are available on Amazon.
The Schlage lock has advanced security features, like an encrypted connection and a built-in alarm for any unnatural door movements and attempted forced entries.
Though it comes in two different styles with multiple finishes, there’s no getting around it: this Schlage lock is bulky and can look imposing on a door. If you want a more unobtrusive smart lock, we recommend skipping this one.
To facilitate check-ins and outs, it has built-in WiFi access so you can monitor your lock, and lock and unlock from anywhere. Easily manage up to 100 customized codes and multiple locks, all from Schlage’s clean app.
Though these locks are meant to be used with Apple’s Home Key, some users report that older generation Apple devices have complications with the keyless entry feature. Considering this is the bonus of upgrading to the Plus (instead of sticking to the regular Encode), this may be a dealbreaker.
“We've tried several different smart locks and what we found is that the best lock for an Airbnb is, hands down, the Schlage Century Smart WiFi Deadbolt Door Lock with Alarm… we are able to seamlessly automate the entire guest entry experience. We can automatically generate access codes, monitor entry access, shut down access and even create custom access codes for specific use cases.” - Joshua Kitlas, Founder & Managing Member of Orinth Properties and Airbnb host
2. Wyze Lock: Best for Hosts on a Budget
The Wyze Lock is relatively old news, coming out in 2020. However, its no-frills approach to smart locks means that its tech isn’t outdated.
The big draw of this smart lock is that it clocks in at $129.98 on Amazon—much cheaper than any of the other picks on our list.
Though it might not have the latest technology, Wyze is a secure, simple lock that will turn your existing door smart by fitting over most deadbolts. It's simple to install and use, and the best part is that it comes at less than $150.
Unsurprisingly, due to its price, this device doesn’t pair with home automation devices. Oddly enough, it also doesn’t pair with other Wyze devices (like the camera and sensors).
This lock lets you give guests scheduled access to your property, and has the ability to auto-lock and unlock. It has a variety of other nifty features, like a log of locks and unlocks, and an alarm that sounds when the door is left open for a specified amount of time.
A few Wyze users have reported problems with Wyze’s door detection feature, noting that it detects open doors, even if the door is closed. This prevents its auto-lock from kicking in. So far, Wyze hasn’t addressed this issue, and the only workaround is to recalibrate the lock.
“By providing unique door codes versus a key, that allows our guests the most flexibility in terms of when they can check in, especially for out-of-towners with delayed flights.” - Christina LeVasseur, Co-owner of Cozy Mountain Escape
3. Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt: Best Durable Lock
Schlage’s Sense line has been around since 2017, but it still comes out consistently as one of the top picks when it comes to smart locks. Starting at $298.75 on Amazon, this lock is by no means the cheapest on this list. You can also check the Schlage website for a list of local retailers like True Value and Home Depot.
Though its technology may not be the most up-to-date, the build quality of this Schlage lock makes this the most durable lock we’ve seen. It’s a heavy-duty lock that can withstand the wear-and-tear of short term rentals.
Unlike the Schlage Encode, this lock doesn’t come with built-in WiFi capabilities. To create codes remotely, you’ll have to purchase the Sense WiFi Adapter and connect it to your network.
Lock and unlock the door from the app, or use the built-in touchpad to input a code manually. With the WiFi Adapter, you can also create and delete guest codes straight from the app.
Keep in mind that the Sense WiFi Adapter isn’t compatible with the Apple HomeKit. You can set up your lock using the HomeKit (instead of the Adapter), but it won’t work with Android devices.
“The lock integrates with Apple TV which connects to an app on my phone. I am able to manage lock codes, let in a repair person, and check on the status of the lock from around the world.” -Veronica Hanson, Airbnb host and blogger at Nomad Veronica
4. August WiFi 4th Gen: Best Compact Smart Lock
The August WiFi Smart Lock (4th Generation) made its debut in 2020; it’s the latest version in August’s lineup of smart locks.
This lock is one of the best around, with built-in WiFi and integration with popular home systems in one tiny package. And when we say tiny, we mean it—its 72mm diameter makes it one of the smallest locks around.
However, its battery life leaves a lot to be desired. August states that the batteries will last you anywhere from three to six months—definitely not the lock for you if you constantly forget to buy replacements.
Unlike many other locks, August integrates directly with Airbnb—automatically giving your guests unique, keyless codes that expire after a set amount of time. You can easily manage and monitor all of this through the August app.
Once your guests book their reservation, they get a unique code and a link to download the August app for keyless access to your property. Though the lock doesn’t come with a keypad, you can purchase one and connect it to your lock for alternative access.
“We have had good success with the August lock; app is easy to use. The lock has an external keypad you can mount in the location of your choice. So far it has been dependable. You can program times and dates of access for certain people with their own codes.” -Joe Creasy, Owner of EMS Realty Solutions and Airbnb host
5. Kwikset Halo Smart Lock: Best Luxury Smart Lock
The Kwikset Halo is only one of Kwikset’s smart lock offerings. This particular model was released in 2020.
Buy it starting from $205.88 on Amazon, or view it (and any local retailers) on Kwikset’s website.
In one relatively small package, you get integrated WiFi capabilities so that you can access the lock (and the log) anywhere you are in the world. As a bonus, this lock looks much sleeker than its contemporaries.
As a caveat, Kwikset is known for its relatively poor customer support—in case you need any help troubleshooting your lock, you may have to skip contacting Kwikset altogether.
Using its built-in WiFi, you can lock the door from anywhere (as long as you’re connected to the internet yourself). Kwikset also lets you create up to 250 codes, one-time codes for contractors, recurring codes (for housekeepers and other maintenance staff), and scheduled codes for renters. Manage all this, plus check who’s entered and exited your property, through the app.
The Halo comes in two styles: one with a sleek-looking touchscreen, and the other with a traditional keypad. Though objectively the touchscreen looks more modern, it can be unresponsive at times.
“Besides being effective it gives extra security for those who are sleeping over which is why it makes it good for any Airbnb!” -Giorgy, Owner and author of G-Extreme Travel and Airbnb host
6. Lockly Vision: Best High-Tech Smart Lock
The Lockly Vision is a smart lock and doorbell camera—all rolled into one. It debuted in 2020 and is still one of the best smart locks you can get today.
At $419.99 on Amazon, this is one of the most expensive smart locks on our list.
A smart lock with built-in WiFi and bluetooth capabilities, plus voice control, a 720p doorbell camera, and even local video storage? Count us in. This Lockly doorbell is our top pick if you want a techy smart lock that does so much more.
This smart lock doesn’t have night vision or motion sensing capabilities. However, the brand new Lockly Vision Elite does—and it’s coming out soon.
Like the other smart locks on our list, the Lockly Vision can be unlocked via your smartphone or with unique generated codes that can be input on the lock’s touch screen. These codes can be deleted at any time. Lockly also has live streaming to show you who’s at the door (complete with two-way audio) right on your smartphone.
Though this lock may be expensive, they have a generous 100% money back guarantee for 30 days. Simply purchase the lock via their website.
“The lock uses smart features like remote access, voice control, and a handy activity feed so you can keep track of who enters and goes. It is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capable.” -Corrie Duffy, blogger at Corrie Cooks
